Abstract
118,799. Edwards, E. L. March 4, 1918. Breach mats.-A leakage-stopper for ships comprises flexible screens attached to the bulwarks and adapted to be pulled automatically into position by weighted cables when the hoisting- cables are released. The screens, which are made of sail canvas clamped at the top between two battens and secured at the bottom to a metal rod D<3>, are two in number, one B being arranged to cover the bow, while the other B' is secured to one side and is adapted to be passed under the keel to cover both sides of the ship. The front screen is pulled against the ship by weights j attached to cables c passing over pulleys F<4>, and is hoisted by cables E<16> passing through rings E<13> and over pulleys F' to a winch g. The side screen is pulled around the ship by weighted cables passing over pulleys and under the keel. It is hoisted by cables C<10> passing over pulleys F<5> and a fair-lead g<1> to a winch H. To facilitate hoisting, cables are provided for lifting the weights hlolding the screen against the ship's sides.
