Alloys for tipping metal articles for the production of hard points or surfaces comprise tungsten, 10-15 per cent of platinum, and 1-3 per cent of iridium, osmium, or ruthenium, and are made by melting the constituents in an electric arc in a reducing gas such as hydrogen, or by means of cathode rays.
