Abstract

226,589. Leech, K. H., and Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. Sept. 18, 1923. Actuated by steam pressure. - In a pump or a compressor wherein the steam acts directly on the pump element as shown in Fig. 1, the piston has a flat end 4 and an annular part 5 which receives a hollow sationary projection 3 mounted on the cylinder cover 2 and to which steam is constantly supplied through passages 13, 12, 10. The upper end of the cylinder is alternately put to steam and exhaust; the lower end 32 constitutes a compressor. An axially-arranged distributing-valve 17 puts the upper end of the cylinder into communication with the inlet 13 and exhaust 31 respectively by controlling passages 12, 18, 14, 15. In a modification the various parts are inverted. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the valve 17 is fluid-actuated and arranged horizontally in a chamber above the compression chamber 32. The space between heads 4, 5 is drained. The apparatus may be used as a boiler feed. The head 5 would then be smaller than head 4.
