Abstract

225,024. Wilson, W. B. Oct. 22, 1923. Oscillating cylindrical and conical valves coaxial with cylinders. -An oscillating sleeve valve 1 for internalcombustion or steam engines is formed at its upper end with an enlargement or flange, from which it is shaped in the form of a curved cone 12, ending in a stem 3, which projects through the cylinder head and receives the driving- gear. The curved portion preferably takes the shape of the tractrix or Schiele'e curve, and is formed with, for example, three ports 5 which communicate with inlet and exhaust ports in the cylinder as the valve is oscillated. The valve may be actuated by the mechanism described in Specification 225,988, being held stationary at the centre of the path of oscillation during compression and firing. A port 8 in the valve coincides with a cylinder port 10 and is uncovered by the piston so as to reduce the cylinder pressure, just before the valve is moved for exhaust.
