Description

METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING' LABEL-CONTINUED SMEET AND APPARATUS THEREFOR The
present invention relates to a method f or manuf acturing a labelcontinued sheet and an apparatus for carrying out the method, and more particularly, to the method f or manufacturing the label-continued sheet in which labels each having an opening formed at a predetermined position thereof are releasably adhered to release base paper in the longitudinal direction thereof with regular intervals provided therebetween and the apparatus for carrying out the method.
Description of the Prior Arts
In recent. years, there is a growing demand for the development of a method for effectively manufacturing a label-continued sheet comprising a label having an opening formed thereon releasably adhered to release base paper.
According to the conventional method for manufacturing such a labelcontinued sheet as described above, the label and the release base paper are punched.
However, in the label-continued sheet thus manufactured, a hole is f ormed on the release base paper as well.
Theref ore, it is dif f icult to hold the l abel-continued sheet around a roller.
The -label.-continiied sheet -is mounted on an. automatic label sticking apparatus for releaang labels from the release base paper to stick them to articles one by one. But labels are not appropriately released from the release base paper when tension is applied to the release base paper and the labels. As a result, the labels are wrinkled in the vicinity of the opening thereof. As such, they cannot be stuck to articles at a predetermined position thereof. The above method is inappropriate for a mass production and carried out at a high cost.
It is therefore the principal object of the present invention to provide a method for mass-producing a labelcontinued sheet comprising labels each having an opening forrped therecn releasably adhered to release base paper effectively and inexpensively and an apparatus for embodying the method.
A first invention relates to a method for manufacturing a label-continued sheet comprises the steps of: forming a laminated sheet by releasably adhering label base paper to release base paper with an adhesive layer; forming a cut line corresponding to the outline of an opening of a - 2 predetermined configuration on the label base paper of the laminated sheet by cutting the label base paper from one principal surface thereof to the other principal surface thereof; releasing an unnecessary portion surrounded with the cut line corresponding to the outline of the opening of the label-base from the laminated sheet in the boundary between the adhesive layer and the release base paper; guiding the laminated sheet in the feeding direction so that the label base paper except the unnecessary portion portion is not released from the laminated sheet; forming a cut line corresponding to the outline of the label on the label base paper by cutting the label base paper from one principal surface thereof to the other principal surface thereof so as -ermified configuto shape the label base paper into a predet ration; and removing an unnecessary portion of the label base paper from the label.
A second invention relates to an apparatus for manufacturing a labelcontinued sheet comprises: feeding means for sequen4Lially feeding a laminated sheet formed by releasabli adhering label base paper to release base paper with an adhesive layer applied to the back of the label base paper; cut line forming means for cutting the label base paper fed together with the release base paper so as to f or.m a cut line corresponding to the outline of an opening of a predetermined configuration; releasing means for releasing an - 3 unnecessary portion surrounL,'-ed with the cut line coriespond.. ing to the outline of the opening of the label base from the laminated sheet in the boundary between the adhesive layer and the release base paper; guiding means for guiding the laminated sheet in the feeding direction so that the label base paper except the unnecessary portion portion is not released from -the laminated sheet; cut line forming means for cutting the label base paper fed together with the release base paper so as to form a cut line corresponding to the outline of a label of a predetermined configuration; and unnecessary portion removing means for removing an unnecessary portion of the label base paper from the label.
According to the present invention, after a cut line coiresponding to the outline of an opening is formed on the label base paper, only a waste surrounded with the cut line is released from the laminated sheet comprisLng the release base paper and the label base paper. The laminated sheet is fed in the feeding direction in such a manner that the guide means prevents the release of the label base paper from the laminated sheet except the waste surrounded with the cut line corresponding to the outline of the opening. In this manner, the opening is formed only on the label base paper. That is, according to a label-continued sheet manufactured in this manner, the opening is not formed on the release base paper, but on the label.
Accordingly, in stiCking the label on an article by an automatic label sticking machine, the label is not wrinkled when tension is applied thereto, so that it is not warped. Therefore, they can be smoothly stucX to the article.
These objects and other objects, -features, aspects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of the embodiments of the present invention when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Fig. 1 is a view showing an example of a manufacturing apparatus for embodying the manufacturing method according to the present invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a label-continued sheet manufactured by the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along the line III-III shown in Fig. 2.
A label-continued sheet 10 includes a belt-like release base paper 12. The back surface of a label 14 is releasably adhered to one principal surface of the release base paper 12 with an adhesive layer 16 formed on the back of the label L4. The labels 14 are spaced at regular intervals in the longitudinal direction of the label-continued sheet 10. The label 14 has, for example, an elliptical opening 18 formed in approximately the center thereof. The opening 18 may be formed in a desired configuration, for example, rectangular or circular as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, respectively.
The release base paper 12 consists of, for example, a long and narrow sheet made of such as paper and a synthetic resin. The release base paper 12 is coated with a release i i i - layer thereon.
agent such as silicon to form a release agent Accordingly, the label 14 is releasably adhered to the release base paper 12.
A method for manufacturing the label -continued sheet 10 according to the present invention will be described below based on a representative manufacturing apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
First, a long belt-like label base paper 3.4A to be formed into the label 14 is releasably adhered to one principal surface of the release base paper 12 with the adhesive layer 16 which is formed by applying a pressure sensitive adhesive to the back of the label base paper 14A. Thus, a laminated sheet is prepared. The laminated sheet is wound around a hDlding roller 52 of a manufacturing apparatus 50 in order to feed it tc each manufacturing process of the label-continued sheet 'LO.
-us 50 includes the holding The manufacturing apparat roller 52 for holding the laminated sheet. one end of the laminated sheet consisting of the label base paper 1471. and release base paper 12 is unrolled and guided to a cut line forming device 54. The cut line forming device 54 serves as a means for forming a cut line corresponding to the Conf.Sguration of the opening 18 and a cut line corresponding to the configuration of the outline of the label 14.
1 In order to form the label 14 having the opening 18 of a predetermined configuration in '-he center thereof, the cut line forming device 54 cuts the label base paper 14A from the upper surface to the lower surfage thereof, thus forming a label inner edge cut line 18a corresponding to the configuration of the opening 18 and a outer edge cut line 14a corresponding to the configuration of the outline of the label 14. The cut line forming device 54 includes a die roll 56 mounted on the surface thereof and having cutting edges arranged in correspondence with the configuration of the opening IS of the label 14 and cutting edges arranged in correspondence with the configuration of the outline of the label 14 such that all cutting edges are located on the same plane. The die roll 56 forms the inner edge cut line 18a and the outer edge cut line 14a on the labE'L base paper 14A. The cut line forming device 54 may be of a flat type die cutter having cutting edges corresponding to the configura.tion of the opening 18 and the outline of the label 14.
The laminated sheet comprising the label base paper 14A having the inner edge cut line 18a and the outer edgc cut line 14a formed thereon is guided to a release plate 58.
The release plate 58 has a function of releasing a waste 19 encircled with the inner edge cut line 18a from the laminated sheet including the label base paper 14A having the the inner edge cut line 18a and the outer edge cut line 14a formed thereon. The waste 19 is released from the laminated sheet in the boundary between the adhesive layer 16 and the release base paper 12. The release base paper 12 and the label base paper 14A having 'the inner edge cut line 18a formed thereon being fed horizontally along the release plate 58 are folded down and then, moved downward in the backward direction. Thus, the waste 19 encircled with the inner edge cut line 18a is released from the laminated sheet comprising the release base paper 12 and the label base paper 14A having the inner edge cut line 18a formed thereon. As a result, the waste 19 encircled with the inner edge cut line 18a moves horizontally due to its rigidity.
The end portion 59 of the release plate 58 is round, or approximately circular in section. The release base paper 12 anc! the label base Faper 14A having the inner edge cut line 18a formed 4%hereon are folded down when they reach the end portion 59.
A cover guide 60 serving as a guide for guiding the lam-nated sheet in the feeding direction is located at a pos-Ltion a little higher than the release plate 58. The cover guide 60 prevents the release of a label portion 141pos,Ltioned between the inner edge cut line l8a and the outer edge cut line 14a of the label base paper 14A from the laminated sheet when it is folded at the end portion 59.
t Referring to Fig. 6a, the cover guide 60 includes a curved contact portion 60a. The width of the curved contact portion 60a is approximately the same as that of the laminated sheet and is curved in corrdspondence with the end portion 59 of the release plate 58, namely, approximately circular in section.
An approximately rectangular through-hole 61 is formed in the center of the curved contact portion 60a such that tbn area of the througb-bole 61 is greater than that of the waste 19 encircled with the inner edge cut line 18a formed orl the label base paper 14A of the laminated sheet which is fed along the release base plate 58.
The cover guide 60 includes rectangular flat contact portions 60b and 60c positioned in both sides of the curved -act portions contact portion 60a. The width of the flat cont.
60k, and 601c are the same as that of curved contact portion 60". The flat contact portion 60b is longer than that of the flat contp.--t portion 60c.
The cover guide 60 comprising curved contact portion ADa %,hi,,h is integrated with the flat contact portions 60b. and 60c consists of a metal or plastics. The cover guide U) is foimed by folding a rectangular metal plate in the shapco, 0 Jji correspondence with the configuration of the releas, "IS with which acts and by plalt the laminated sheet con, 1 formAng the rectangular through-hole 61 in the center of the folded portion.
The cover guide 60 is located at a position a little higher than the release plate 58 and in parallel -with the surface of the release plate 58. The through-hole 61 formed in the center of the curved cont-act portion 60a is located in correspondence with a position in which the wate 19 is released from the laminated sheet folded at the end portion 59 of the release plate 58. Therefore, the waste 19 encircled with the inner edge cut line 18a of the laminated sheet comprising the release base paper 12 and the label basE paper 14A is folded at the end portion 50. of the release plate 58. As a result, the c3rci,,lar waste portion 19 is released one by one from the label base paper 14A of the lamnated sheet and inserted intc, the thr -hole 61 of the cover guide 60.
The cover guide 60 comprising the curved contact portion 60a and flat contact portions 6C)b and 60c prevent s the release of the label portion l4b from the lamInatec' sheet except the waSte 190 encircled with the innei edgc cut, - in the feedin; line 18a and guides the laminated sheet direction.
In this manner, the waste 19 encircled with the inner edge cut 3ine 18a and released from the laminated sheet by the release plate 58 drops to a waste container B through k the through-hole 61 of the cover - guide 60. That is, the opening 18 is formed only on the label base paper 14A of the laminated sheet comprising the release base paper 12 and the label base paper 14A. The cover guide 60 -may comprise only the curved contact portion 60a.
Thereafter, the laminated sheet including the label base paper 14A which has been formed into the configuration of the label 14 as a result of the release of the waste 19 therefrom -is guided to a pair of release rollers 68 and 70 through guide roller 62, 64, and 66.
Referring to Fig. 1, a waste 15 of the laminated sheet including the label base paper 14A which has been formed into the configuration of the label 14 is wound around a trimming roller '72. Consequently, the labels 14 are woland around a winding roller 74. The waste 15 may be released from the laminatted sheet by a release device compris-Lng the release rollers 68 and 7D as shown in Fig. I immediately after the predetermined configuration of the label 14 Is formed on the label base paper 14A by the cut line fcrmin-_g device 54.
According to the label-continued sheet 10 thus man,-:factuled, the opening opening 18 is not formed on the releasc base paper 12, but only on the label 14. 'Unlike the conventional label-continued sheet in which an opening is formed 011 both a release base paper and a label, the 1 label-continued sheet 10 is suPrior in that even though tension is applied to the release base paper 12 and the label 14 having the opening 18 formed thereon, it can be wound around the winding roller 74 without being wrinkled or displaced. Accordingly, an automatic label sticking apparatus not shown is capable of correctly removing the label 14 from the release base paper 12 and sticking it to an article at an appropriate position thereof.
The cover guide 60 may be replaced with two cover guides 82 and 84 which are formed by cutting the cover guide 60 as shown in Fig. 6 along both edges thereof in a predetermined width.
similarly to the cover guide 60, the cover guides 82 and 84 each include curved contact portions 82a and 84a of the samtc conf Lguration as the end port 'Lon 59 of the release - contact portons 82h, and 82c are formed on plate 5&. Flat both ends of the curved contact portion 82a. Sim'larly, flat contact portions 84b and 64c are formed on both ends of the curved contact portion 84a. The cover guides 82, and 84 may be formed by bending a narrow quadrang-.ilar bar macc of plastics in the shape of J in correspondence with the release plate 58.
The two cover guides 82 and 84 are each located at a position a little higher than the release plate.58 and extend along the release plate 58. They are parallel with 13 - A each nther such Irhat- the Jinterval between t..beTn iz srnaller than that of the laminated sheet comprising the release base paper 12 and label base paper 14A.
The two cover guides 82 and 84_ prevent the release of the label portion 14b from the laminated sheet except the waste 19 encircled with the inner edge cut line 18a and guides it in the feeding direction.
Accordingly, the waste 19 which has been released from the label base paper 14A at the release plate 58 drops to the waste container B through the space between the two cover guides 82 and 84.
In the above embodiment. the outer edge cut line 14a corresponding to the outline of the label and the inner edge cut line 18a corresponding to the outline of the opening of the label are s-iTn-.iltane:--.-,sl',! formed on the Cut line forming Gevice 54, but the outler edge cut line 14a and the inner edge cut line 18a may be formed separately by different cut line forming devices.
Although the present invention has been described and illustrated in detail, it is clearly understood that the same is by way of illustration and example only and is not to be taken by way of limitation, the spirit and scope of the present invention being limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
