Heating by direct contact of steam. - Highpressure steam is generated in a vessel having no external heating means by injecting into the water steam which is withdrawn from the vessel and superheated in a tubulous heater. Steam withdrawn from a vessel a by a pump u is forced through a superheater h<1> and then into a perforated pipe a<1> in the water in the vessel. Steam taken off for driving an engine is superheated in a heater h<2>. The feed-supply to the vessel is preheated in a heater h<3>. The operation of the pump u and the fuel supply to the heater furnace are automatically regulated in accordance with the rate of steam consumption. At starting, part of the water from the boiler is heated in a separate furnace, or low-pressure steam is supplied from a furnace or electrically-heated boiler-
