221,509. Surmay, J. Sept. 8, 1923, [Convention date]. Wire strainers for tightening and manipulating bale ties, metallic binding-strips &c., applicable to bales, postal packages, pipe joints, &c. A casing a, Figs. 4 and 9, carries an axle c slotted at c<1> to receive the end of the strip v and terminating on the outside of the casing in a square projection. The strip is coiled round the axle and passes through a slot b<1> in an extension b, which carries also a sleeve l formed with a knife edge and an axle o operated by an arm s, Fig. 9. In use, a portion of strip is pulled out through the slot b<1> and through slots in the members l, o and disposed around the article z, Fig. 9, after having been passed twice, in opposite directions through a slot y in a fastener x. The free end v<1> is bent as shown in Fig. 9, and the slack portion of the strip is taken up by rotating the axle c by means of a detachable handle M. The fastener x is then pushed down close to the article z, and, for the final tightening, the handle M is transferred to the end of a shaft g, Fig. 4, carrying a pinion f meshing with a gear e on the shaft c. Backward movement is prevented by a ratchet e<1>. The arm s is rotated to cause the sleeve l to shear off the strip, the end of which is bent down and covered by turning over a dished portion x<1> of the fastener. The casing may contain spare strip and fasteners.
