Be it known that I, DUNCAN KENNER, a citizen of the United States of America and a resident of New Orleans, parish mi Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Wire-Binding Device, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to a device to bind or fasten any material with wire such for example, as binding rubber hose to a pipe or fitting, fastening yarn on a handle as 1n making mops, fastening wire about a barrel to strengthen the same, and or numerous like uses where a firm and tight binding of the wire is required.
The general object of my invention is to provide a device for eecting a secure bindmg of wire with little expenditure .strength and with facility.
The manner and means whereby the above and other objects are attained will clearly ap ear as the descri tion proceeds.

In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a tubular element 10 is provided, the bore 11 of which is advantageously cylindrical at its upper end and slightly tapered preferably at its forward or lower end, the intermediate portion of the bore tapering pronouncedly toward the forward end and therefore ila-ring upwardly.
A wire winding shaft or drum 14 is provided which extends across the bore 11 at the cylindrical portion 12 and has bearings in depressions 15 in the upper edge of element 10. A transverse hole 16 is formed in the shaft 14 for the passage of the wire end therethrough as further referred to hereinafter. A handwheel 17 or other grasping 1922. Serial No. 574,202.

A handle 18 is secured preferably detachably to the element 10 at a side thereof and `for convenience of manipulating the device, said handie is disposed at right angles to the axis of v the shaft 14. In the illustrated example a threaded stud 19 on the forward end of the handle engages a threaded hole in the thickened portion 20 of element 10.
In the described device the element l0 is' tapered exteriorly and particularly so at its forward end the taper in practice being sufficient to permit the device to be rocked bodily after the wire is tightened to a position to one side for fastening the tightened wire.
In the use of the above described device a proper length of the binding wire `A is wound about the material to be bound as for example the yarn B on a mo handle indicated at C. For the bindingo the wire one end is formed with a hook a; and after being wrapped about the material to be bound the wire is passed through the hooked end a and through the bore 11 from the front end 13. The end of the length oi wire is then passed through the transverse hole 16 in winding shaft 14 and said shaft is turned by gras ing the wheel 17 to wind the wire on sai shaft. The winding of the wire on the shaft tightly will draw the wire through the hooked end a and bind it tightly about the material B. The wire having been wound and ltightened the complete device is rocked bodily with the front end as a center in a direction to bend the same adjacent to the hook ai and form a Second hooked end thereon interlocking with the hook A ater which the surplus wire may be snipped o I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myseltl strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly. the same can be considerably varied without departure 'from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
