mnnnnnnnnnnn e nnnnnnnnnnnnnia uuuuuuuuuwu g Iuuuuuuuuuuuu Patented Nov. 12, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BAND on? Application filed October 30, 1928.
The present invention relates to that kind of band clip which'comprises a U shaped piece provided with apertures in the side members thereof through which is passed a slotted bolt. The band is made of a thin piece of soft metal or other suitable materlal and one end thereof is bent around the base or connecting portion of the U shaped piece. The band is then passed around the article to be clipped and its other end is passed through the slot in the bolt. The bolt, the head of which has been provided with a saw cut, is then rotated to wind up part of the band and to cause it to grip the article around which it has been passed. When the band has been sufficiently tightened a nut is screwed on to the bolt and clamps the sides of the U shaped piece against the edges of that portion of the band which around the bolt.
The object of the present invention is to construct an improved band clip which is cheap to manufacture and efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved clamp in which the bolt may be removed, when its nut has been removed, without unwinding the end of the band and in which the bolt may be replaced on the end of the partly wound band.
A further object of the invention is to cheapen the production by forming the U shaped piece from strip metal and by forming the slot in the screw threaded end from side to side thereof by means of a saw cut.
According to the present invention the U shaped piece is bent or stamped from a strip of sheet metal and has therefore a thin base around which the end of the band is bent nearly double. When the end of the band is p thus bent it is practically impossible for it to slip over the base of the U shaped piece when in use. The bolt is slotted from side to side by means of a saw cut entering atthe screw threaded end thereof. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: i
Fig. 1 is an elevation of one side of the complete band clip, and Fig. 2 is a side elevaso tion of the same.
is wound Serial No. 316,032, and in Great Britain February e, 1928.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 but showing the band in elevation.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the slotted bolt, and Fig. 5 is an elevation showing a modification of the U shaped piece.
Figs. 6 and 7 are side elevations showing two modifications of the slotted bolt.
a is a band or strip of thin soft metal, or other suitable material, one end of which is bent nearly double and is passed around the thin base or connecting portion of the U shaped piece I), as seen clearly in Fig. 3.
The U shaped piece I) has an aperture 0 in each side member thereof, through which is passed the bolt d having a longitudinal slot 6 entering at the screw threaded end thereof and passing therethrough from side to side. The other end of the band a ispassed through the slot 6 and the bolt cl is then rotated by means of a spanner until it has wound a portion of the band a around the bolt. lVhen the band a has thus beentightened around, for instance, a hose pipe, a nut f is screwed on to the bolt d and clamps the two sides of the U shaped piece I) tightly against thatportion of the band a which is wound around the bolt (1, thereby locking the bolt d and band a and preventing this latter unwinding.
In order to release the clip on an article it is only necessar partly unwin the band a by rotating the bolt (5. The slot 6 entering the bolt d at the screw threaded end thereof enables the bolt d to be withdrawn from the clip without completely unwinding the end of the band a, as soon as the nut f has been released. Such a slot 6 also enables the bolt d to be passed over the end of the band a while it is in a coiled condition.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the U shaped piece I) is bent up from a stri of sheet metal the ends of which have been ent up at right angles to the base or connecting portion thereof. The base or connecting portion is thin and flat whereas in the construction shown in Fig. 5 the thin sheet metal base or connecting portion is stamped into a curved form to conform more closely to the circular articlearound which the clip is to be placed.
It will be understood that the bolt d shown in Fig. 4 may be modified by substituting a to loosen the nut f and to head having a saw cut 9 therein, as shown in Fig. 6, which can be rotated by means of a screw driver. The head of the bolt d may have apertures h therein, as shown in Fig. 7, to receive a detachable rod (not shown) by which it may be rotated in known manner.
What I claim as my invention is An improved band clip having in combination a U shaped piece made of sheet metal 10 and the two side members of which are connected by a base which is curved to conform to the shape of a circular article to be gripped, a slotted boltwhich is passed through perforations in said side members, a thin metal band one end of which is bent nearly double around the thin base of the U shaped piece and the other end of which is passed through the slot in the bolt and a nut on said bolt substantially as set forth. e 90 In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
PERCY CHARLES ALFORD.
