Abstract

Coating.-In coating the surface of an article such as a picture-frame moulding with sheet metal, the strip of metal 4, previously coated with gutta-percha or other adhesive, is roughly bent to fit the article 5 by hand, and is then passed under a rubber or metal die 3 in a press 1, or under both in succession, whilst supported on spring-mounted rollers 7. Rubber faced rollers or a reciprocating tool may be used to finish indented parts of the moulding, and side pieces 16 may be used to press the strip against the sides, or cam-operated levers may be mounted on each side of the press. To complete the attachment the die 3 is inverted and passed under cutterrollers 21, which cut a groove in the article and force the edge of the strip into the groove. Fig. 13 shows a suitable device for applying the adhesive to the strip from a tank 25 carried by an arm vertically movable against springs (not shown) and provided with a spreading-plate 33 beneath which the strip is drawn. An adjustable plate 28 with a notched lower edge engages a slot in the bottom of the tank and serves to control the escape of adhesive.
