Abstract

476,253. Embossing relief-pictures. HERTZ, B. S., and POSNACK, E. R. June 5, 1936, No. 15826. [Class 11] [Also in Group XVI] A relief-picture is made from a stretchable picture-bearing sheet by assembling several layers of sheet material, cutting out a silhouette aperture and dies from the entire assembly, mounting one of the layers on the rear of the picture sheet and interposing certain of the other layers between the face of the picture sheet and a flat surface to form a spacing wall, all the silhouette apertures coinciding with the picture, placing the dies against the corresponding areas to be depressed, and applying pressure upon the rear of the picture sheet through the aperture to force the sheet within the spacing wall towards the flat surface until the dies are brought into contact therewith to produce depressions in the corresponding areas. The picture 24 is traced on translucent paper, and thence on to an assembly of one sheet of cardboard between two thicker sheets of composition board. From this assembly a silhouette opening corresponding to the outline of the picture is cut by a jig-saw, and the portions corresponding to the areas 25-30, Fig. 1, which are to be raised or depressed, are separated. The original picture, which may be soaked in glycerine solution, is glued to a backing of craft paper 38, Fig. 19, which is coated with an extensible material such as glue. The cardboard silhouette 41 is mounted on the back of the mounted picture and the composition board silhouettes 39, 40 are superimposed thereon in register to form a retaining wall within which is placed a yieldable and preferably heated plastic mass 56, preferably comprising whiting, ground hide glue, rosin, and linseed oil. The portions 39, 40 are then transferred to the face of the picture. According to the depth of depression required, one or more of the composition board layers 45, 47, 48, 51 corresponding to the portions 25, 26, 27 which are to be depressed are placed in register on the face of the picture. To secure the correct modelling certain of these layers are shaved off at the edge as at 54, 54a. The assembly is placed between the jaws of a press and compressed until the layer-portions 48, 51 come into contact with the upper jaw of the press and act as dies to model the picture 24. The assembly is then removed from the press and may be modelled in detail by hand and is finally mounted on a backing. For quantity production a plaster cast and thence a duplicate metal mould are made from the modelled picture, and the mould is used to model similarly mounted pictures, arranged between silhouette cardboard mounts and backed with a plastic filler.
