Apparatus for holding chromatographic plates 44 of different thicknesses side by side with their top surfaces in coplanar relationship comprises a support 45 having resiliently yielding surfaces beneath opposite marginal edges of the plate, a base frame 1 for carrying the support and providing spaced non-yielding locating surfaces 5, 32, which are relatively movable towards and away from one another from first relative positions at which they lie in a common plane above respective marginal edges of the plates, to second relative positions at which the spacing between the non- yielding surfaces is greater than the spacing between said yieldable surfaces to allow the plates to be lifted from the apparatus after they have been coated; and a handle operated mechanism for producing relative movement of the non-yielding surfaces and which is adapted, after moving them to the first relative positions, to reduce the distance between the yieldable and non-yielding surfaces. Preferably the base 1 has one fixed side angle plate 3 and one movable side angle plate 30 hinged to a fixed angle iron 10, and movable through a spring loaded rod and sleeve connection 35, 36 (Fig. 3, not shown); the rod 35 being eccentrically pivoted to a cam 15. The cam 15 is rotated through suitable shafts and gearing from handle 27 and the cam mechanism is also used, after the angle plate 30 has been moved to a position in which the non-yielding surface 32 is above the marginal edges of plates 44, to raise the support 3 with the plates 44 thereon, so as to bring the upper surfaces of the plates into contact with the non-yielding surfaces 5, 32. The yieldable surface of support 45 are formed by rubber strips 48 and a covering flexible plastics sheet 50 so that when the upper surfaces of plates 44 are in contact with the non-yielding surfaces, the variations in thickness of the plates is taken up by the yieldable surface of the support 45.
