Abstract
220,684. Vickers, Ltd., and Lucas, O. D. April 19, 1923. Rotary furnaces; charging and discharging.-In a retort furnace of the kind comprising rotary outer and inner shells forming a retort B and a heating space A<1>, a stationary member B', carrying breaker and conveyer elements b' is fitted within the retort. The elements b<7> are preferably arranged to scrape the wall of the retort, and the member B<7> may be perforated for the supply of steam to the charge. The retort is tapered at both ends to form charging and discharging necks within which are screws B<6> carried by the member B<7>. The heating-burners c project through a stationary casing C at the discharge end of the apparatus, and the gases flow through the space A<1> in a direction opposite to that of the material in the retort. Alternatively, the burners may be distributed over the length of the outer shell. The gaseous products of distillation are exhausted through the pipe b<2>.
