Abstract
218,605. Imray, O. Y., (Ehrhardt & Sehmer Akt.-Ges.). April 15, 1924. Combined fluid-actuated and mechanical gears, with auxiliary valves. A uniflow steam engine is provided with an auxiliary exhaust valve for the main cylinder which is normally closed by the compression but may be closed by main pressure steam supplied by an auxiliary inlet valve which opens before the main inlet valve. The auxiliary exhaust valve 6 is opened by a spring and works in a cylinder communicating with the main passage 9 through a perforated bush 8. The main and auxiliary inlet valves 12, 15 are arranged coaxially. The main valve is opened by a rod 20, and the auxiliary valve by a projection 21 on the rod. When valve 15 is raised, steam passes through passage 19 and closes valve 6 and supplies through restricted ports 24 an initial flow of steam to the main cylinder. In a modification the auxiliary exhaust valve is made as a two-step differential plunger, one end of which enters the passage 9. In a further modification, the exhaust valve is mounted beneath a perforated cup-like piston provided with a supply port, to the interior. In both latter constructions, the passages 19 and 9 are connected by a restricted duct to effect an initial cylinder supply.
