Abstract

461,549. Staging. HEYWOOD, C. F. Oct. 8, 1936, No. 27332. Convention date, May 4. [Class 7 (v)] Starting valves 6 on the engine cylinders 1 . . 4 are supplied in turn with pressure fluid from a simple form of rotary distributer 16 through pipes 12 ... 15, and compression is relieved in each cylinder on the compression stroke by opening the starting valve in that cylinder by means of a piston 20 actuated by pressure fluid conveyed by one of the pipes 25 . . . 28 branching from the pipes 12 . . 15. As shown in Fig. 2, the piston 20 has a rod 21 adapted to engage the valve stem 22, and the piston and valve are normally held in the positions shown by springs 29, 10. When the piston is moved to the right by pressure fluid admitted to the pipe 25, the valve 6 is opened by the rod 21 and a port 23 in the piston connects the valve casing 7 with the atmosphere through a pipe 24 to relieve compression in the cylinder. A diaphragm 30 having a hole 31 is interposed between the pipe 25 and the piston, and the return speed of the piston may be varied by modifying the size of the hole 31. In a modification, the pipes 24, 12 enter the valve casing 7 on opposite sides and are controlled by connected piston valves, so that only one of the pipes at a time is connected to the casing 7. A spring is interposed between the rod 21 and the valve stem to cushion the shocks. In a further form, Fig. 4, the piston 50 has parts 51, 52 of different diameters and moves in a liner 55 having ports 56 leading to the atmosphere and ports 57 communicating with the pipe 12. When pressure fluid is admitted through the pipe 12 it opens the valve 6 and is admitted to the engine cylinder. Pressure fluid afterwards admitted through the pipe 25 moves the piston 50 to the right, opening the valve 6, cutting off communication at 62 with the pipe 12, and opening communication with the atmosphere by means of ports 60, 56.
