Abstract

Lead suboxide mixed with metallic lead is obtained by placing pieces of metallic lead in a rotatable vessel and introducing an oxidizing gas while rotating the vessel. The lead may be in the form of balls, and balls of hard material such as steel may be placed in the vessel with them to effect abrasion. The vessel may be a perforated cylinder mounted on a horizontal axis and provided with a pipe for the supply of the oxidizing gas. The cylinder may be heat-insulated, and the gaseous current may be utilized for carrying the suboxide through the perforations. The temperature employed is 60-200 DEG C., the heat being obtained by friction, chemical action or from an outside source such as electric or gas heating. Specification 176,924 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 198,647 and 215,222.
