Abstract
352,677. Annealing ; cementation; gas generators. ELFSTROM, N. G., Fagersta, Sweden. June 10, 1930, No. 17796. [Class 72.] In the annealing or other heat treatment of metals, especially iron or steel, the annealing chamber is filled with a gas obtained by the passage of blast furnace gas, producer gas, or the like through a, layer of carbon heated electrically, so that the carbon content of the gas may be controlled. By increasing or decreasing the temperature of the carbon layer a gas is obtained which will carbonize or decarbonize the metal, or have no action on the metal. The gas may be preheated electrically before traversing the carbon layer. Air is supplied by pipe a to a gas producer A and the gas passes by pipe b to a regenerator B having a container m filled with charcoal and heated by a resistance coil c, the regenerated gas passing by a pipe d to the annealing chamber. The charcoal may be heated by an electric are. In Fig. 2 the gas generator and regenerator are combined in one structure, the lower part of the shaft m being surrounded by the heating coil c. The glowing layer'of carbon may be located in the annealing chamber which is electrically heated.
