Abstract

The process described in the parent Specification for the production of black shades upon the fibres from arylazo-1-naphthylamines and arylides of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid is modified by the use of non-sulphonated arylazo-1-naphthylamines having in the aryl residue a side chain containing a basic group; the solubility of the diazo azo compounds is thereby increased; such side-chains may be -CH2.NH2, -CH2.NR1R2, -O.CH2.CH2.NR1R2, R1 and R2 being alkyl groups. In an example, cotton is impregnated with 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic-b -naphthalide and developed, without drying, with a diazo solution prepared from the aminoazo compound from diazotized 4-aminobenzyldimethylamine and 1-naphthylamine. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the use of arylazo-1-naphthylamines having as substituent the group -O.CH2-NR1R2. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
