Abstract

Azo dyes are made on the fibre by coupling a diazo compound with a component of the formula <FORM:0499336/IV/1> (Ar=phenyl or naphthyl which may be substituted and Ac=acyl), the diazo compound being generated from a stabilized diazo compound such as a diazoamino compound, azosulphonate or a nitrosamine. The dyestuff components must be free from SO3H and COOH groups. The term diazo compound includes tetrazo compounds. Compositions comprising the stabilized diazo compound and the coupling component may be applied to the fibre and developed by acid treatment. Dark brown and black shades are obtained on cotton, regenerated cellulose and cellulose esters and ethers. According to examples, cotton piece goods are printed with a paste containing 3-nitrobenzene-azo-41-acetylamino-61-naphthol, the diazoamino compound from 4-chlor-2-aminoanisole and methylglucamine, cellosolve, caustic soda and starch tragacanth, dried and treated with steam containing acetic acid vapour; other components specified are dianisidine, aniline, 2 : 5-dichloraniline, 4-chlor-2-aminoanisole, 4-chlor-2-aminotoluene, o-chloraniline, 4-chlor-2-aminophenetol, o-anisidine, 4-chlor-2 : 5-dimethylaniline, 4-benzoylamino-2 : 5-dimethoxyaniline, 5-nitro-2-aminoanisole, 1-methoxy-2-naphthylamine, 4-chlor-2-aminodiphenylether, m-aminobenzotrifluoride, o-aminoazotoluene, 4 : 41-diamino-diphenylamine; piperidine - a - carboxylic acid, sarcosine, 1-methylaminoethane - 2 - sulphonic acid, 1-naphthylamine - 2 : 4 : 8 - trisulphonic acid, 2 - ethylamino - 4 - sulphobenzoic acid, proline, nipecotinic acid, benzyleneimine - p - sulphonic acid; 4-nitro-2-methoxybenzeneazo-41-acetylamino - 61 - naphthol, 3 - nitrobenzeneazo - 41-acetylamino - 71 - naphthol, 3 - nitrobenzeneazo-21 - acetylamino - 61 - naphthol, 2 : 5 - dichlorbenzeneazo - 41 - benzoylamino - 61 - naphthol, 3-amino- or 3-acetylaminobenzeneazo-41-acetylamino - 61 - naphthol; the azo dyes aniline, 3 - nitro - 4 - aminotoluene, 4 - chlor - 2 - aminotoluene, 4- or 5-nitro-2-aminoanisole, 4-chlor-2-aminoanisole, o- or p-phenetidine, m-nitroaniline --> 1 : 7-, 2 : 6-, or 1 : 5-aminonaphthol acylated with acetic anhydride, benzoyl chloride, a -furoyl chloride, hexahydrobenzoyl chloride or methylchlorocarbonate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the coupling on the fibre of diazo or tetrazo compounds derived from amino or diamino compounds with components of the formula <FORM:0499336/IV/2> In a further example cotton is padded with 2 : 5 - dichlorobenzeneazo - 41 - acetylamino - 61-naphthol and developed with diazotized 2 : 5-dichloraniline. Ar in the above formula may also be the residue of a -aminoanthraquinone. 3-Aminocarbazole is specified as a diazo component. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
