Abstract

Insoluble azo dyes are produced on the fibre by applying to the fibre a mixture containing an alkali salt of a diazo-sulphonic acid of the general formula: <FORM:0379279/IV/1> where x and y = substituents such as alkyl, o-alkyl or halogen, and an alkali salt of a coupling component capable of forming an o-oxyazo dyestuff, and steaming. Instead of the alkali salt the free coupling component together with alkali may be used and dyeing or printing assistants, e.g. chromate may be added. Specified coupling components are b -naphthol and its derivatives, e.g. aroylaminonaphthols, arylides of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid (cf. Specification 23732/13, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], arylides of 6-halogen- or 6-aryl-amino-2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid (see Specification 330,349, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]; derivatives of 1-naphthol-4-carboxylic acid (see Specification 211,223, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], e.g. 1-naphthol-4-phenylketone; pyrazolones and b -ketonic derivatives, e.g. mono- and diacetoacetylaminoaryls (see Specifications 211,772, and 211,814, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]; dioxyquinolines (Specification 332,940, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]; 2-hydroxycarbazole-3-carboxylic acid arylides; arylides of 6- or 7-hydroxy-2 : 1- and 1 : 2-naphthocarbazole-carboxylic acids (Specification 330,643, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]; arylides of 2-oxyanthracene-3-carboxylic acid (Specification 367,907). In examples (1) the sodium salt of 2 : 5 - dichlor - 4 - acetylaminobenzene - diazosulphonic acid is made up into a printing paste with the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid which is printed on the material and steamed; a deep garnet print is obtained; (2) material is printed with a paste containing 1 - methoxy - 4 - chlor-5-benzoylaminobenzene-2-diazo sulphonic acid sodium salt and the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, passed over hot cylinders and steamed; (3) material is printed with a paste containing 4-benzoylamino-2-methyl - 5 - methoxybenzene - 1 - diazosulphonic acid (sodium salt), the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and sodium chromate and steamed; (4) the potassium salt of 4-benzoylamino-2 : 5-dimethoxybenzene-1-diazosulphonic acid, the o-toluidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and caustic soda are ground together, the mixture is made into a printing paste, printed on cotton and the goods are slightly dried and then steamed; the disodium salt of the o-toluidide may also be used; (5) 2 : 3-oxynaphthoyl-1-amino-2-methyl-4-methoxybenzene and the sodium salt of 4-benzoylamino-2-chloro-5-methoxybenzene-1-diazosulphonic acid are made into a printing paste and applied as above; (6) a ground mixture of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid - o - toluidide, diacetoacetyl - o - tolidine and the sodium salt of 4-benzoylamino-2 : 5-dimethoxybenzene-1-diazo sulphonic acid is made into a paste and similarly applied; (7) bleached cotton piece-goods are impregnated with a solution containing the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, the sodium salt of 2 : 5 - dimethoxy - 4 - (4<1> - methylbenzene - 1<1>-sulphoylamino) - benzene - 1 - diazo-sulphonic acid and caustic soda dried and steamed; a uniform reddish-violet dyeing is obtained. A table showing the shades obtained from various diazosulphonates and coupling components of the above-mentioned classes is also given. Diazosulphonic acids of the above formula are made by treating the diazo solutions of the corresponding amines with an alkali metal sulphide.
