Abstract
212,643. Fairey Aviation Co., Ltd., and Fairey, C. R. Dec. 14, 1922. Dash-pots.-In shock absorbers of the kind provided with an air vessel in communication with the lower end of the dash-pot cylinder which is provided with an apertured piston, the only communication between the two ends of the cylinder is by way of the apertures of the piston, the effective area and number of such apertures being controlled by a valve adapted to be adjusted automatically or at will. Preferably the air vessel is of such a height as to reach approximately to the height of the liquid in the cylinder and of a diameter not substantially greater than that of the cylinder, whilst the volumes of air maintained above the piston and in the air vessel are substantially equal at equal pressures. As shown, the piston 14 is hollow, carries a pair of cup leathers 32, and is provided with apertures 19 which are controlled by a valve 20 carried by an inner piston rod 22 adapted to rotate automatically or at will through a lever 23. The air vessel 25 communicates by means of a port 24 with the cylinder 11 of the shock absorber which is intended particularly for use in aircraft.
