Abstract
523,283. Shock-absorbers. STEVENS, A. H. (Cleveland Pneumatic Tool Co.). Dec. 30, 1938, No. 37856. [Class 108 (iii)] A shock absorbing strut for an aeroplane comprises a pair of telescoping cylinders having their interiors communicating through a liquid metering orifice, a third cylinder surrounding one of the telescoping cylinders and an annular piston floating within the third cylinder surrounds one of the telescoping cylinders and is adapted to be engaged by the other of the telescoping cylinders after the strut has been compressed to a predetermined extent. The telescoping cylinders 10 and 11 are surrounded by a cylinder 27, containing an annular piston 39, and extending downwards substantially the same distance as the cylinder 10. In Fig. 1, the strut is shown in extended condition, in which the piston 39 seats on a shoulder 14 formed on the cylinder 10. In operation the cylinder 11 moves upwardly, the liquid in the chamber 25 being metered through the passages 20 and 21 into the chamber 24. Towards the top of its stroke the cylinder 11 engages the piston 39 and starts it upwards against the compressed air in the chamber 38. An additional pneumatic shockabsorbing unit consists of a chamber 57; formed in the lower end of the cylinder 11 by the fluid-tight partition 23, in which slides a telescoping cylinder 12.
