Abstract

531,168. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. ELEKTRON CO., GES. Sept. 1, 1938, No. 25579. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1937. [Class 108 (iii)] In a spring strut for aircraft comprising two telescopic tubes, provided with fluid damping means and mechanical springing means, only the annular space between the tubes and the members guiding one tube within the other contains the damping fluid, and a throttle device, including an annular piston and additional throttling parts and having a different action for inward and outward movements, is provided within the space. In one form, Fig. 1, the strut comprises helical springs 3, 4 guided by outer and inner tubes 1, 2, the tube 2 sliding in guides 5, 6, fixed to the tube 1, and forming between them and the wall of the outer tube an annular space 7 which is filled with damping liquid. The tube 2 carries rings 9, 10, Fig. 4, between which is provided a floating piston 8 apertured at 20 and having considerable clearance within the tube 2. The ring 10 is provided with sector shaped recesses 22 so that when the strut is compressed and the piston 8 bears against the ring 10, fluid flows through the apertures 20 and the clearance space 21. The ring 9 is not recessed, so that, when the strut extends, fluid flows through the apertures 20 only. In another form, Fig. 2, the annular space is divided into a working space 7 and storage space 12 separated by partitions 14 having passages 15 controlled by an intermediate ring 13, the arrangement being such that fluid can flow from the space 12 only during extension of the strut. The piston 8 carries a throttle device, in the form of a valve plate 16, having a different action for inward and outward movement. The guiding and packing members for the tube 2 may be adapted to be inserted from one end in the tube 1 and secured by screw means at the end of the tube, the members being supported from each other by a distance tube.
