Abstract

1,129,075. Suspension units. L. C. E. MILLY. 26 April, 1966 [3 May, 1965; 30 Sept., 1965], No. 18105/66. Heading F2S. A telescopic shock absorber suitable for mass-production and, e.g. for suspension systems of motor cycles or drums of washing machines, comprises telescopic inner and outer tubes 1, 3 which have sealing-tight guide rings 9, 13 and packing 14 respectively to form a closed annular fluidtight annular chamber and which accommodate a compression spring 5, the tubes 1, 3 being filled with liquid up to the necessary level with a gas cushion above the liquid, and flow of liquid between the annular chamber and the space inside the tubes being controlled by a damping orifice 12 and an aperture 11 controlled by a one-way valve 10. The tubes 1, 3 are attached to connectors 2, 4 respectively by sealing-tight joints such as packing retained by circular grooves 6, a dust cover 16 being also carried by the tube 1. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a dust cover (16) and an end cap (17) are secured together by a circular recess (19) which also serves to locate the upper end of the spring (5), the lower end of which may also be located by a similar circular groove (20), Fig. 3 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a visible spring (21) is constrained between a collar (23) on an outer tube (26) and a cup (22) on the upper end of a rod (25) which passes through two sealing-tight joints (31), (32) and guide rings (28), (29) and which carries a piston (33) having a damping constriction. The piston (33) slides in a spacer tube (30) which separates the guides 28, 29. Extension of the unit is limited by a stop in the form of a Belleville washer (34) which is held between the joint (32) and an annular groove (35) and which co-operates with a washer (36) on the inner end of the rod 25. The deformable gaskets of the joints (31), (32) allow for any expansion of the hydraulic liquid. In an alternative arrangement, .Fig. 5 (not shown), which is generally of the kind shown in Fig. 1, the end connectors (101), (102) have screw-threaded engagement respectively with the upper and lower tubes (107), (111), a resilient upper end of a dust cap (103), moulded in plastics, having beads (105), (106) adapted to engage in recesses in the attachment (102) of the tube (107). The upper end of the spring (117) is retained by grooves (115), (116) in the inner tube (107) which has a recess (109) to secure a partition (108) having a one-way valve (114). The lower guide ring (119) is connected by a groove (118) in the embodiment according to Fig. 6 (not shown), a piston (121) slidable in the tube (120) being carried by the inner tube (122). By appropriate apertures in the tube (122) damping can be asymmetrical, e.g. mainly in the recoil direction. Any gas may be separated from the hydraulic liquid by a diaphragm and a rubber bellows may protect the outside of the shock-absorber.
