Abstract

Combined-flow type; regulating; working-fluid supply.-In an hydraulic turbine comprising a runner with unshrouded blades 8 of the axialradial flow type discharging outwards into an outwardly-expanding annular suction tube D, the supply through intake passage 5 and guide vanes 11 is controlled by a plunger gate 20 arranged below the runner as shown to facilitate the removal of the runner after detaching the head ccver 13. Water under pressure is admitted below the plunger 20 from a passage 25 through an adjustable valve 24, and actuates the plunger according to the position of a piston 30 carrying a valve 31 adapted ta close an escape port 32 in the plunger nose. The piston 30 is moved by fluid pressure controlled by the turbine governor or other means and supplied through pipes 35, 36, a rod 40 actuating the restoring mechanism. The inclination and cross-sectional area of the draft tube, D are chosen to ensure unbroken continuity of the water column. In a modification, the runner is removable through the intake passage of the turbine. A modification with a horizontal shaft is described, the plunger being in this case accessible from one side without disturbing the other parts of the turbine. An open flume setting is also described for the horizontal irstallation.
