Working-fluid' supply.-A hydraulic turbine has an intake 32<1> directing the flow radially inwards and with a whirl located below an outlet 81 receiving the discharge radially and with a whirl, a conduit of a double flaring conical form leading from the intake 32<1> to the discharge outlet 81 and a turbine runner 45<1> in this conduit spaced from the entrance thereto so as to leave a free transition space W<11> between the runner 45<1> and the entrance. A concrete base 33<1> supports a stay vane ring 34<1> and adjustable guide vanes 55<1> and has a passage 133 beneath leading to the extreme end of the intake passage 32<1>. The upper portion of the conduit which serves as a draft tube D" is bounded by an outer ring casting 38' carving a discharge stay vane ring 74 and an inner casting 75 supported by the discharge stay vane ring 74. The inner casting 75 supports the turbine shaft and a concrete ring 79 which is connected by stays or piers 80 to the foundation above, thereby leaving an outlet passage above the concrete ring 79. The concrete ring 79 and base 33<1> are of oval form. The runner and other parts may be removed vertically. Governor controlled fluid pressure devices may be used to operate the adjustable guide vanes bv acting on a ring 85 connecting arms on the guide vanes 55<1>. A chamber 87 gives access to these parts for inspection. The runner may be of the unshrouded axial-flow type.
