Telescopic and expanding tables have on the movable table top parts d runners or slides f to which are pivoted at 24 wedge pieces 25, each of which engages a reversed and corresponding wedge 27 on the underneath of the extension leaves l, whereby they may be raised to extend the table top. The upper edge of the runner or slide f is formed with a recess 23 for part of its length to accommodate extension leaves l, and the lower edge is provided with two stop shoulders 28, 31 connected by a slightly sloping part, whereby as the lower edge is drawn over the end member t of the fixed table frame it will cause the corresponding table top to rise and keep its under surface clear of the top surface of the extension leaf. The side of the wedge piece 25 opposite to that adjacent the runner to which it is pivoted, is slidingly supported in a fixed part of the table frame by a tongue and groove connection 26 with a fixed bar 22 of the table frame. The shoulder 31 holds the runner in its inner position; the shoulder 28 limits the outward movement of the runner, and is formed with a wedge extension 30 acting as a wedging heel piece to clamp the extended parts in position.
