Abstract

210,431. Loewe, B. Jan. 24, 1923, [Convention date]. Silk (cocoons), cleaning; processes.-In reeling off silk cocoons, the silk worm papae may be first killed by immersion in a bath containing neutral or alkaline salts, mineral or organic acids, or oils, which dissolve in or can be emulsified with alcohol or ether, then treiated, either directly or after drying, in a solution of alkali or alkaline earth, either caustic or combined with weak acids at ordinary temperature or lower, 'and then reeled off while in a moist or wet state in air or in cold water. The action of the bath may be accelerated or retarded by adding soap or oil thereto. The cocoons after treatment in the alkaline bath may be dyed in a bath to which oils are added, and then reeled off. The reeled off threads, Grebes or twisted silk, is then scoured in hot water. The elasticity, flexibility and toughness may be increased by the addition of glycerine, glucose, or other substance. The process may be carried out in a vacuum or under pressure.
