Abstract

210,358. Walton, G. W. July 2, 1923. Magnetic instruments. - A telephone receiver is formed as a casing in two parts between which the diaphragm e is clamped, part c of the casing being formed as a permanent magnet with a central tubular limb f, and the part b is formed of soft iron with a central tubular limb g, the coil a being housed in the part band waxed in position. The two parts are clamped together by an earpiece d which screws on to the part b. The diaphragm vibrates owing to eddy currents induced in it, the part b and the magnet c being slit to confine such currents to the diaphragm, but this action is also aided by the ordinary magnetic action. The diaphragm is exposed to the air on both sides through the tubular portions f, g and the air gaps on the two sides of the diaphragm may be arranged to be equal. The instrument may be used as a loud-speaking telephone receiver, as a telephone transmitter and as a transmitter for submarine sound signalling.
