Steam - generator furnaces. - The furnace of an externally-fired boiler has an inclined wall 4 at the rear of the grate 3 surmounted by a bridge 5 having its upper surface in close. proximity to the boiler to form a restricted passage for the furnace gases. A rearwardly extending wall 6, inclined upwardly, forms a tapering combustion chamber or flue leading to the back of the boiler which is enclosed by a wall 7 and arch 8.
