209,256. Vaughan, E., and Taylor, F. H. Nov. 25, 1922. Vices.-A vice having a movable jaw slidable in relation to a fixed jaw is provided with a key which engages a slot in a slide rigid with the fixed jaw and also in an aperture in the movable jaw, so as to guide the latter in its sliding movement and lock it against rotation, and is displaceable to permit a swivelling movement of the movable jaw. The movable jaw b has a depending sleeve c passing through openings in a square or rectangular key f and in a clamping block d engaging a longitudinal slot in the slide e. The key f partly engages a correspondingly shaped aperture in the jaw b so as to guide the latter during its sliding movement in parallelism with the fixed jaw l. By means of a nut c<1> on the upper threaded end of the sleeve c the block d may be drawn by the headed part c<2> of the sleeve into contact with the slide c to lock the jaw b in any. position. The key f may be displaced farther into the aperture in the jaw b so as to be released from the slot in the slide e, whereupon the jaw b may be swivelled on the sleeve c. The displacement of the key f is effected by a spring g when the holding-down screw i is released, the screw i engaging a rod h having a cross-pin h<1> projecting through openings c<3> in the sleeve c and engaging a depression f<1> in the key. The jaw b may be adjusted by a screw j carried by a member k having teeth e<1> engaging racks on the slide e.
