Cutting slices in succession.-An intermittent feed mechanism for pressing and cutting machines for tobacco &c. comprises a spur-wheel b with which gears a pinion c carried by a rocking lever g pivoted concentrically with the wheel b and operated by a link h, the pinion c being so mounted that it turns the wheel b when the arm g moves in one direction, but rolls idly upon the wheel b in the other direction. The pinion may consist of a toothed ring j, Fig. 3, surrounding a cylinder k in the surface of which are tapering recesses l containing rollers or balls m that allow relative movement between the ring and the cylinder in one direction only. The pinion c is connected to the arm g by a link e and can be raised out of engagement with the wheel b by means of a link n connected to a link p that is guided on a boss on the wheel b and lifted by a spring v acting on a lever r. A treadle t is depressed to bring the pinion c and wheel b into engagement, and is held by a hooked spring catch w pivoted at x and carrying a releasing treadle y.
