UNETED ANTI-IQNY P. G'I'UNTA AND CHARLES P. GIUNTA. F PEZELADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FRUIT Application filed April 5,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANTHONY P. GIUN- TA and CHAnLns P. GIUNTA, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit Presses, of which. the "tollowing a specification.
Our invention relates to fruit presses for extracting fruit juices and more particularly to ratchet mechanism for rotating the pressing nut on the screw. The object is to provide a ratchet mechanism or simple and durable construction which is capable of placing great pressure on the fruit and which may be produced at low cost.
This object, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, we attain in the tollownig manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fruit press having our improved ratchet mechanism applied thereto,
Figure 2 a plan view of the ratchet mech anism shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 a front view of Figure 2,
Figure 4 a section on line l-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 an inverted plan View of one of the arms which forms a part of our invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a support, 2 the cage, 3 the pressing blocks, 4 the screw to which our improved ratchet mechanism 5 is applied.
The ratchet mechanism includes a base 6 having a hole 7, horizontally extending fingers 8 spaced around the hole and a boss 9. A ratchet wheel 10, having an annular groove 11 and a threaded bore 12, is rota-tably mounted on the base between fingers 8 with the fingers projecting into the annular groove and with the bore 12 concentric with hole 7. The ratchet wheel is provided with an upwardly projecting annular guide 13 having upwardly extending teeth 14 thereon. A head 15 is pivoted to base 9 by a pin 16 and is provided with a pair of stops 17 at opposite sides to limit its oscillating movement by engaging the ratchet whee. A long arm 19 and a short arm 20 are pivoted to the head at 21 and 22 and each arm is provided with a pair of depending guide lugs 23 at opposite sides of annular guide 13. A plunger 24:, slidable in the end of PRESS.
1924. Serial No. 704,343.
each arm, is provided at one end with a pawl 25, adapted to engage teeth 1d, and on the other end with a reversing knob 26 normally engaging the arm. A spring 27 is interposed between the pawl and the arm for normally keeping the pawl in engagement with the teeth. A pin 28secured to the knob is adapted to engage in either pinhole 29 or 30 for keeping the pawl in the forward or reverse position. 1'
In use head 15 is oscillated by manipulating handle 31. This causes long arm 19 to move in one direction and its pawl to catch the ratchet teeth and rotate the ratchet wheel, and short arm 20 to move in the opposite direction and its pawl to slide over the ratchet teeth, thus an oscillating movement of the head will rotate the ratchet wheel. To reverse the pawl, knob 26 is pulled upward until pin 28 clears pinhole 29. The knob is then moved to bring the pin into the hole 30. Pawl 25 will then be reversed and an oscillating movement of head 15 will cause the ratchet wheel to rotate in the reverse direction.
lVith the ratchet mechanism above described great turning force may be placed on the ratchet wheel by a comparativelv small force on handle 31.
While we have described our invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts may bev changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence we do not limit ourselves to the precise construction set forth, but consider that we are at liberty to make such changes and alterations fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. Ratchet mechanism including a base; a ratchet wheel rotatable on the base; an annular guide projecting upwardly from the wheel; teeth projecting from the guide: a head pivoted on the base: arms pivoted to the head and having one end disposed over the teeth; guide lugs depending from the arms at opposite sides of the guide. and a pawl slidable in each arm for engaging the teeth.
2. Ratchet mechanism including a base: a ratchet wheel rotatable on the base: an air nular guide projecting upwardly from the wheel; teeth projecting from the guide: a head pivoted on the base; arms pivoted to the head and having one end disposed over the teeth; guide lugs depending from the arms at opposite sides of the guide, and a pawl slidable in each arm between the lugs for engaging the teeth.
3. Ratchet mechanism including a base; a ratchet wheel rotatable on the base; an annular guide projecting upwardly from the wheel; teeth projecting from the guide; a head, pivoted. on the base; arms pivoted to the head and having one end disposedover the teeth; guide lugs depending from the arms at opposite sides of the guide; a plunger slidable in each arm; a pawl on the plunger for engaging the teeth; means for reversing and holding the pawl in either position, and a spring between the pawl and the arm. 7
l. Ratchet mechanism including a base; a ratchet wheel rotatable on the base; an annular guide projecting upwardly from the wheel; teeth projecting from the guide; a head pivoted on the base; arms pivoted to the head and having one end disposed over the teeth; guide lugs depending from the arms at opposite sides of the guide; a plunger slidable in each arm; a pawl on one end oi? the plunger for engaging the teeth; a
knob on the other end of the plunger for holes, pivoted to the head, and having one end disposed over the teeth; guide lugs dep'endingfrom the arms at opposite sides Off the guide; a plunger slidable in each arm; a pawl on one end of ther'plungerfor engag ing the teeth; a knob on the other end of the plunger for reversing the pawl; a pin in the knob adapted to engage the pin-holes for keeping the pawl in either position, and
a spring between the pawl and the arm for keeping the pawl in engagement with the teethi V I V In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
