LYMAN GEORGE REYNOLD$ AND ARTHUR LYTLE HOLIJIAN, 0F TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
WRENCH.
Application filed September 8, 1921.
6 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LYMAN Gnonon RnYNoLns and ARTHUR LYrLn HOLMAN, both of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is the specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in wrenches and the object of the invention is to devise a wrench with a head portion piv otally connected to the handle portion whereby the head may be set at different angles to the handle to admit of the wrench being used on nuts which would otherwise be inaccessable thereto. A further object is to provide ratchet means between the head and the handle of the wrench whereby the wrench can only be used in one direction i. e. the direction in which the pressure on the movable jaw of the head will be in a clownward direction thus preventing wear on the slide thereof.
A further object is to provide improved means for pivotally connecting the head to the handle.
Our invention consists of a wrench constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of our wrench.
Fig. 2 represents a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 represents a front view partly in scection, and
Fig. 41- represents a cross sectional view thereof showing the means for pivotally connecting the head to the handle.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
1 is the handle of the wrench provided with the bifurcated upper jaws 2 and with the vertical orifices 3. at is the head of the wrench having the fixed jaw 5 and the movable jaw 6 with the tooth slide 7 operated by the suitably journalled knurled worm S. 9 is a suitably curved rack formed on the lower end of the head 4:. 10 is a countersunk screw pin extending through'the lower end Serial No. 499,159.
of the head and threaded through theother jaw 2. 11 is a plunger having the toothed upper end 12, said plunger inserted through the orifices 3 and normally spring-held by the spring 13 against the teeth on the lower end 9 of the head. 14 is a vertical slot in the plunger 11 and 15 is a lever pivotally mounted in the handle 1, the inner end of said lever engaging the lower wall of the slot 14-.
The wrench is actuated as follows:
In order to set the head at a suitable angle relatively to the handle it is merely necessary to ratchet the head on such handle, or in the event of the head already being swung over at an angle by lifting up the lever 15 the plunger 11 will be depressed and the toothed upper end thereof disengaged from the teeth on the lower end 9 of the head whereby such head may be swung into the desired position freely of the handle. By letting go the lever 15 the spring 13 will restore the plunger into its operative position wherein the tooth 12 will engage the required tooth on the lower end 9 of the head.
From the above description it will be seen that the wrench can only be operated in one direction, namely in the direction in which the movable jaw 6 will be pressed downwardly, thus preventing wear on the slide 7.
By threading the end of the screw pin 10 into one of the jaws 2 it will be seen that any spreading of the bifurcated jaws 2 will be obviated, as would otherwise occur.
What we claim as our invention is:
A wrench comprising a handle a head pivotally connected to the handle and having an arc-shaped lower portion provided with ratchet teeth, a plunger slidable in a longitudinal orifice in the handle and having a toothed upper end, one of the faces of the tooth being bevelled, a spring normally holding the toothed upper end of the plunger in engagement with one of the ratchet teeth on the head and a lever pivotally mounted in the handle and the inner end thereof engaging a slot in the plunger.
