Description

(No Model.)
D, S. BLUE.
WRENCH.
No. 326,887. Patented Sept. 22, 1885.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
DENNIS S. BLUE, OF FREMONT, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM F. JOBBINS,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,837, dated September 22, 1885.
Application lled August 29, 1884.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS S. BLUE, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in nut-wrenches, the object of the same being to provide a wrench which may be simple in its operation, durable and efticient in use, and economical in construction 5 and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement with the sliding jaw locked. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the nut and thumb-nut; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the wrench.
In the accompanying drawings, a represents a bar having the stationary jaw b at right angles thereto. The upper part of the bar is slightly concaved transversely, and provided with the right-hand screw-threads c in its face. The sliding jaw d is movably secured on the bar a by means of the arms e at each end, which embrace the said bar. The rear end of the jaw d is provided with a perforation, in which is loosely secured or journaled one end of the bolt f. This rear end of thejaw may be provided with a socket in which the enlarged end of the bolt bears, as shown in Fig. 3; or, if preferred, the said perforation may be threaded, and the bolt may be provided with threads adapted to register therewith, as shown in Fig. 2; or the perforation may be smooth and the bolt extend through sufficiently far to bear against the upper portion of the jaw a little below the clamping-face. To the bolt f is rigidly secured the nut or cylinder g, provided with the left-hand screwthreads h, which extend partially around the nut, leaving a smooth surface or blank, i, between the ends of the threads corresponding in size to the width ofthe bar a. The loop j is rounded (No model.)
at its inner end, and is provided with the perforation e', through which loosely passes the bolt f. The loop is titted on the bolt immediately below the nut or cylinder g, and is adapted to embrace the bar a and slide thereon. The upper end of the loop is provided with the foot m. The gib n is provided with the lugs o, between which are adapted to iit the rear arm, c, and the foot m. The upper part of the gib n is smooth, thus enabling a free movement on the bar a. This gib is placed in position before the bar a is passed through the loop of the movable jaw. The outer end of the bolt f is provided with the circular thumb-operating lever h, which is rigidly secured on the said bolt, and is provided with the lug q, by means of which it is operated.
The bar a is secured in the handle i' in any suitable manner, and at which connectingpoint is rigidly secured the open ferrule s.
From the above construction it will be seen that in order to adjust the wrench to any required size the lug q is turned, thus causing the boltf to partially revolve, and bringing the smooth surface i of the nut or cylinder g to the face oi' the bar a, thus disengaging the screw-threaded portion of the nut from the screw-threads c, and permitting the sliding jaw d to be moved back and forth on the bar. When the jaw d is brought in contact with the object to be operated upon, the nut or cylinder g is turned by means of the lug q,
and the screw-threads on the said nut engaging with the screw-threads c on the bar, the jaw d is caused to tighten on the object, and at the same time is locked against displacement.
It is evident that slight changes can be made in the construction shown without deviating from the spirit and scope of my invention; and I do not therefore limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes as properly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
