Band; blocks acting on drums; force-transmitting mechanism.-A band brake is provided' with means for adjusting the clearance between one half of the brake band and the drum without affecting the adjustment of the other half. The band 5 is anchored by the engagement of the slotted member 13 thereon with the stud 11 on the fixed shield plate 8. A rod 19 passes through the conical bore of a lug 20, on one end of the band through a plate 17 fixed to the plate 8 and through a trunnion pin 21 freely mounted in the forked end of a lever 22 pivoted on a lug 23 on the other end of the band. Adjusting nuts 29, 30 on the rod 19 engage the lug 20 and the pin 21 interengaging projections and recesses 31 for locking the nuts being provided. Springs 27, 27 are interposed between the plate 17 and the lug 20 and between the pin 21 and a collar 28 fixed on the rod 19. When the brake is applied by the pull rod 25, the lower part of the band is first engaged' with the drum and the spring 26 is then compressed and the upper part applied. Either part of the band may be adjusted independently of the other half by manipulating the respective nut 29, 30. The invention may be applied to brakes comprising hinged half sections instead of a band of the kind shown.
