Abstract
652,912. Internal shoe - drum brakes. FREUND, A. Nov. 16, 1948, No. 29787. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1947. [Class 103 (i)] A device 9 for the adjustment of the shoe clearance in a hydraulically operated brake is pivoted at one end on a bracket 20 and at the other end to a bracket 23 secured to the shoe, and comprises a cylinder 17 within which is a spring-loaded resilient plug 15 having passing through it a rod 11 with an enlarged head 12 at one end, and which is screwed into an eye 10 at the other end and connected by a pin 8 to the bracket 23. When the shoes 4, 4<SP>1</SP> are moved into engagement with the drum 3, the normal clearance 2 is permitted without movement of the plug 15 by its distortion in combination with the play in the connection 22, 23. If due to shoe lining wear the normal clearance is exceeded, the force exerted on the shoes by the actuator 7 is sufficient to move the plug 15 relatively to the cylinder 17. When, however, the brakes are released, the force of the retraction spring 6 is insufficient to move back the plug 15 so that the shoes are re-set at their original clearance. In a modification the plug 15 has a conical central aperture and the rod has a correspondingly conical external surface, the compression spring being located inwardly of the plug.
