Abstract
621,335. Automatically adjusting brakes. PRATT, J. H., and MANLEY, G. E. Feb. 19, 1947, No. 4765. [Class 103 (i)] A device, whereby a predetermined clearance between the friction surface of a brake and the drum on which it acts, when the brake is in the " off " position, may be maintained substantially constant despite the wearing away of the friction lining 12, comprises a stop member 14 having at its outer end a phunger part which is of a material substantially harder than the friction lining and which contacts the drum, and at its inner end a cranked part 14d, which by bearing against an abutment 19a rigid with the back plate so cants the member 14 that a very high frictional resistance to further movement is produced between the sides of a slot 14a in the stop member and the rectangular section part 13a of a pin 13 passing through it. The pin 13 is secured to the web of the brake shoe by a nut 18 and has on it above the member 14 a friction washer 15 under the compression of a spring 17, so that when the brake is applied the stop member moves out with the brake shoe web until the plunger part contacts the drum, but as the brake lining wears away the stop member is pressed in relative to the shoe by the brake drum, thereby maintaining a fixed clearance when the shoe is fully retracted. The fixed abutment 19a is in the form of a conical plug that may be screwed in or out of the back plate 6 to provide fixed adjustments of the brake shoe clearance.
