Abstract

Fire extinguishing by solutions or liquid mixtures.-In automatically started foam fire-extinguishing plant, water from the hydraulic mains is detained by a valve w held down by a membrane y acted on by compressed air in a chamber 4, and in the piping connecting this chamber to the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, such air being released at a valve n when a member o fuses. Thereupon water passes through the valve w to the plant, which comprises a vessel containing a solution of alkali carbonate and a vessel containing acid and foam-producing powder. The fusible member o is held by a screw r. When it is desired to extinguish fire in a receptacle containing inflammable liquid the foam passes to a pipe 6 containing spouts c which allow the foam to fall on the surface of the inflammable liquid from a small height. The air is introduced into the chamber 4 and its connecting pipe through a valve and pressure gauge.
