[Class 47 (ii)) A portable fire-extinguisher, comprising a container for a fire extinguishing liquid and a gas cartridge for expelling the liquid, is characterized in that the inner end of the cartridge f abuts against a disc d sealing it from the liquid, and the outer end thereof is fitted with a dome-shaped diaphragm h which, when it is pressed inwards, causes the inner end of the gas cartridge to rupture the sealing disc and to be perforated by a piercing member 3. This member e is arranged on the opposite side of the sealing disc to the cartridge and is fitted in the end of a cylindrical cartridge container c. The gas from the perforated cartridge passes through holes c<4> in the cartridge container into the main container, and the liquid is forced by the pressure of the gas through a non-return valve n and ejected from a nozzle m. The pressure in the container forces the cartridge and diaphragm outwards and restores a flange h<1> on the diaphragm h to its seat on a leather or other washer i to prevent leakage. A nut j allows the spent cartridge to be removed and the container to be refilled with liquid. A new sealing disc, which may be of a material sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Cellophane," is inserted, and is held in place against a shoulder c<2> by a spring g which also bears on the shoulder of the gas cartridge. The cartridge container is dried before the insertion of the new cartridge.
