Abstract

Jacks.-The lifting pillar a of a jack is provided with racks c, d one of which is engaged by the nose f<1> of a pivoted actuating handle f and the other of which is engaged by a pawl e mounted eccentrically in a rotatable disc g. An arm i, Fig. 4, attached to the disc is normally held in position between studs l by a spring m, but can be released by a member o connected to the handle f when it is desired to release the pawl e for lowering. The tubular pillar a is closed by a plug u and contains a perforated piston s mounted on a rod q fixed to the base. The space between the piston and plug is filled with a viscous fluid.
