Turning.-In a change-speed feed or cam-shaft driving-mechanism for automatic screw-machines &c. the low speed drive, which is transmitted through change gearing or, in a modification, through constant-mesh change-speed gearing, is automatically engaged when the fixed high speed is disengaged. A bracket a secured to the machine bed is provided with a worm-shaft b and a parallel shaft c mounted in sleeves d, e bearing on the bracket. The sleeve c carries a loose pulley m and a fixed pulley n provided with a planet pinion p engaging fast and loose gears q, r on the shaft c, the gear q having one more tooth than the gear r. Reverse rotation of the gear r is prevented by a pawl engaging a ratchet wheel s. The worm shaft b carries fast gears f, g engaging gears j, h secured on the sleeve d and shaft c respectively. The gears g, h are changeable to vary the slow speed or they may be replaced by a series of automatically-selected constant-mesh gears. The shaft c carries a clutch member t in constant engagement with a long tenon on the sleeve d and engageable by cam and lever mechanism with the sleeve e. In operation when the clutch member t engages the sleeve e the high speed drive is transmitted to the worm shaft b through the sleeve d and gears j, f, the shaft c then revolving idly. When the clutch member is disengaged from the sleeve e the slow drive is imparted to the shaft c through the planet gearing and transmitted to the worm shaft through the gears h, g.
