Abstract

440,148. Drilling machines. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and CROWTHER, H. R., Park Side, Coventry. Feb. 5, 1935, No. 3706. [Class 83 (iii)] A drilling or like machine has a spindle 14 fed axially by means including a planetary gearing, a planet wheel 24 of which is in mesh with two different-toothed gears 25, 30, one of which is a stationary reaction member, provision being made for sliding the planet out of mesh with the stationary gear and for locking the planet to its carrier, when a quick feed or quick return is desired. The spindle 14 is free to slide in, but rotatably connected to, a sleeve 19 which is rotated through gearing 21 from an internally toothed flywheel 15, which may be driven by hand or in any other way. The lower end of the sleeve 19 carries a flange 23 which forms part of the housing for the planet wheel 24, the latter engages a pair of wheels 25, one of which has one more tooth than the other. The lower wheel 30 is fixed while the upper wheel 25 is slowly rotated to effect feed of the spindle through the screw 26 and sleeve nut 27. The planet wheel 24 is moved out of engagement with the stationary gear 30 and fastened to the carrier 23 when a rapid feed or return is required.
