The tool-head for a boring and facing machine in which a lead-screw is used to displace the facing slide is characterized in that intermediate gear means are supported for rotation about a shaft secured to the machine frame and in mesh with driving gear means coaxial to and rotatable with the tool-head and with driven gear means supported inside the head and driving the lead-screw, whereby rotation of the lead-screw and displacement of the toolslide results from rotation of the head relative to the machine frame. The facing slide 62 is moved by a lead-screw 58 and nut 60. The lead-screw is driven through a pinion and bevel gears, Fig. 1 (not shown), from a gear 42. The latter is mounted on a sleeve, driven by an adjustable slip clutch 36-38, from a shaft 32 driven by a gear 30. This gear receives its rotation from a ring gear 28 freely carried by a shoulder on the back of the head. The ring gear is rotated at one of three speeds by the gears 10 keyed to the head adjacent the ring gear 28. A pinion 12, slidably keyed to a sleeve 14 integral with a gear 16 and supported by a spindle 18 secured to a fixed part of the machine frame adjacent the facing head, is moved by hand lever 26 to engage one of the gears 10 (of equal pitch diameter but varying in the numbers of teeth). The gear 12 is thus driven and drives the gear 16 and the ring gear 28. For a quick return movement of the tool slide the wheel 12 is moved to a neutral position between the gears 10 and the wheel 16 is locked, thus stopping rotation of the ring gear 28. When used for turning or boring the tool slide may be set by hand and a graduated disc shows the setting.
