Abstract
637,258. Rotary tool heads. GIDDINGS & LEWIS MACHINE TOOL CO. July 30, 1947, No. 20628. Convention date, April 24, 1941. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] The rotary tool head of the horizontal boring, drilling and milling machine described in Specification 531,759, is modified by arranging the housing 26 for the head so that it is axially adjustable on the power-driven spindle 23, mounting the annular gear 39 for effecting feed of the tool slide 30 in freelyrotatable manner on the housing, and providing means for releasably retaining the gear against rotation. The housing 26 is fixed to the spindle 23 by an adaptor 33 which is bolted to the housing and is adapted to be connected in adjusted position on the spindle by a key 34 and setscrew 38. The annular gear 39 is fixed to the hub of a hand-wheel 40 freely rotatable on the adaptor and adapted to be held against rotation by a chain. The gear 39 meshes with a gear 43 rotatably mounted in the housing 26 and the drive therefrom to a screw 56 for operating the tool slide 30 includes a change-speed unit 46 and clutch mechanism 52 for controlling the direction of feed of the tool slide. The speedchange unit provides six speed settings under the control of a manually-operated rack and pinion drive 84, 85, and reversing clutch mechanism 50 is automatically operated from this drive to ensure that the drive to the mechanism 52 is always in the same direction despite the fact that alternate speed settings of the speed-change unit causes its output shaft to drive in opposite directions. In addition to the power feed of the tool slide when the hand wheel 40 is held stationary and the spindle 23 rotated, the slide may be traversed manually either by turning the hand wheel 40 when the spindle is at rest or by a hand crank inserted into a socket 106 carrying the bevel gear 103 of the mechanism 52; a micrometer dial 107 is mounted at the outer end of the shaft to provide a continuous indication of slide-feed both during power and manual drive.
