Abstract

202,774. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). June 10, 1922. Addition to 201,629. Residual gases.-Discoloration of the glass of incandescent lamps containing a tungsten filament, as described in the parent Specification, is prevented by applying to the filament carbon, or a solid carbonaceous material, in a finely-divided state. The quantity of carbon usually applied to the filament is about 0.1 per cent by weight of the filament, and is insufficient to change the physical properties of the filament. The filaments may be coated with carbon in various ways, for example, by spraying with water containing graphite in a colloidal form, the filaments being distributed uniformly over a sheet of paper on a rotating hot plate. Red phosphorus may be mixed with the carbon. India ink, lamp black, starch, gum arable, and aniline dyes are given as examples of other carbonaceous substances which may be used.
