Abstract

Ionizable dyes, such as auramine, indigo tetrasulphonate, Acilan Poncean &c., are retained on a source sheet preparatory to electrophonetic printing by being adsorbed on a suitable adsorbent material, e.g. charcoal, carbon black, alumina or silica gel. The dye is preferably added to a slurry of the adsorbent material until it is saturated and the resultant mixture is used to coat, impregnate or form a design on a paper sheet. Alternatively, it may be added to a paper slurry during the production of the sheet. Adjacent dye particles may differ as regards colour, mobility and charge.ALSO:A source sheet suitable for use in electrophoretic printing comprises a base layer of paper supporting a material such as carbon black, charcoal, alumina or silica gel having ionizable dye particles adsorbed thereon. In one example a slurry formed from 9 gms of carbon black and 100 c.c. of water is saturated with a dye such as acilan ponceau and the resultant mixture is used to coat a paper sheet. Other suitable dyes include auramine and indigo tetrasulphonate. The said mixture may impregnate the surface of the sheet, may be applied in design formation, or may be introduced during the paper-making process, in which latter case the sheet is coated with a layer of cellulose fibres. Adjacent dye particles may differ as regards charge, mobility and colour.ALSO:A source sheet suitable for use in electrophoretic printing comprises a material such as carbon black, charcoal, alumina or silica gel having ionizable dye particles adsorbed thereon, which material is added to the paper slurry during the formation of the sheet, or a sheet of paper may be dipped in the slurry. The dye particles may be of different colour and may have different mobilities and electrical charges. Suitable dyes are stated to be auramine and indigo tetrasulphonate. The resultant sheet is coated with a layer of cellulose fibres before printing.
