Abstract
200,238. Rose, W., and Rose Bros. (Gainsborough), Ltd. April 18, 1922. Feeding and registering webs. - Relates to apparatus for feeding a web or strip of paper or other material in correct longitudinal register with a cutting, embossing, or other device, of the kind comprising two pairs of feed-rollers acting alternately, the second pair of rollers being provided with a pin or projection to engage spaced perforations in the web while the feed surfaces of that pair are inactive, and draw the web into a definite position with respect, to the cutting &c. device before it is re-engaged by the feed surfaces, and consists in the provision, between the two pairs of rollers, of a web-retarding device comprising two elements adapted to lightly grip the web which passes between them. As shown the web 33, which is provided with equally spaced printed or other designs and with perforations between the designs, is fed to cutting-rollers 45, 49 by two pairs of feed-rollers 4, 5 and 6, 7 geared together and rotating continuously. The rollers 4, 6 are carried by arms 21, 26 loose upon a spindle 22 and are pressed into engagement with the rollers 5, 7 by springs 29 arranged between projections 27, 28 on the arms 21, 26. The roller 4 has a feeding segment 32 of a slightly larger diameter than the roller 7 and the roller 7 has a non-feeding portion 52 and a pin 34 adapted to engage the perforations in the web and coact with a gap 35 in the roller 6. Arranged between the feed-rollers is a web-retarding device comprising a stationary block 36 with side flanges 37 and a brake block 39 loosely engaging slots 40 in the flanges 37 and pressing the web on to a portion 41 of the block 36. A curved part 38 of the block deflects the web out of the plane which is tangential to the feed rollers. In operation, the feeding segment 32 of the roller 4 feeds the strip forward loosely to the block 39 and this feeding movement begins jusb before the non-feeding part 52 of the roller comes opposite to the web. The pin 34 then engages a perforation in the web and positively feeds the web forward from the retarding device until the feeding surfaces of the rollers 6, 7 again engage the web to feed it to the cutting- rollers.
