Abstract

557,285. Severing by tearing. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Standard Register Co.). Feb. 12, 1943, No. 2381. [Class 31 (ii)] [Also in Group XVI]- A paper-trimming device, which is especially applicable for severing the margins 13 formed with feed holes 10 from a record or like sheet 3 after this has passed through a typewriter, tabulating or other machine, is constructed with a pair of feed rollers 14 for engaging the margin strips 13 after the sheet 3 has passed through the typewriter &c. the main body of the sheet being directed over a guide plate 11 which has :a width equal to the distance between the perforations of the margins 3. The arrangement is such that the rollers 14 feed the margins 3 in a path which diverges from the path of the sheet 3 so that severance of the margins is effected on the lateral edge of the guide plate 11. At the beginning of the operation, the forward edges of the margins are severed by tearing along perforated lines, or by cutting, in order to start their feed in divergent paths. Instead of employing two pairs of draw rollers 14 driven by gearing 16, 17 from the platen roller, only one pair may be used, or the margin strips may be fed by a spring-pressed roller of a length at least equal to the full. width of the sheet 3 plus margins which is arranged to co-act directly with the platen to press the margin strips 13 against the platen. The feed pins 9 are projected by a cam to engage the feed perforations 10.
