Abstract

Two passages 4 through the piston communicate with transfer passages 5 and lead to a port 3 formed in an insert in the piston crown. The combustible mixture issues as a jet, centrally in the cylinder, and displaces burnt gases outwardly and downwardly, to form a stratified charge. The port may be elliptical in cross-section, the major axis being in an axial plane through the cylinder about which a plurality of exhaust ports is symmetrically arranged. <IMAGE>
